Common on many GM cars and trucks, and pretty easy to do. If you DIY, just ignore most of the stuff about trying to lock the column, the idea is not to let the steering wheel rotate while it's disconnected (would ruin the clockspring for the airbag). I would tie it with a bungee cord so it can move a little bit for lining up the new shaft.
Most of the time you can feel the pop in the steering wheel, and through the brake pedal too.
